Walking the edge. .

Walking the edge. . There is such fine line in this travel life of knowing when to allow our kids to do challenging and somewhat scary stuff and when to be safe. . The beehive hike in Acadia National Park is notoriously on the edge of a cliff the entire time. We didn’t know how dangerous it would be or whether it would be safe to take the kids. We were especially nervous about Liam (our 7 year old), and he was a little nervous as well. . After much deliberation, we decided to go for it and it was totally worth it. We safely and steadily made our way up the mountain, proudly watching our children climb up the side and knowing all the while that they will remember this hike for the rest of their lives. . Sometimes we don’t, sometimes we play it safe. Sometimes that’s the right thing to do. . But whenever possible we want to challenge our kids to do stuff that’s hard, that’s scary. Because those things stick with you for a long time, they shape your understanding of yourself - what you can accomplish and what you’re made of. . We all had a great hike on Beehive. The views were beautiful and the hike was an adventure, but for Liam, it was a defining moment when he did a hard thing and he won’t soon forget it.

Y’all this is my heartbeat right here. Backpacking in the mountains with amazing views and my favorite people. . I’m pretty sure this looks far more like what most people thought we meant when we said we were going to be RVing full time. Right?! . Back in August we set out on our first family backpacking trip in the Mt. Hood National forest. After ALOT of prep work and research and gear purchasing, we finally were ready to get out there! . My mom heart could not be more stoked that my kids are wanting to do this kind of thing as they are getting older, and that all those hikes that we powered through when they were younger and whiny are finally paying off . . Tent camping is still the worst, for anyone that is wondering , but I loved being out in the wilderness and waking up in the mountains with the the sun and the birds, and getting to experience something new. . What about you? Does this sound like torture to you or an awesome way to adventure? .
