Walking the edge.
.
There is such fine line in this travel life of knowing when to allow our kids to do challenging and somewhat scary stuff and when to be safe.
.
The beehive hike in Acadia National Park is notoriously on the edge of a cliff the entire time. We didn’t know how dangerous it would be or whether it would be safe to take the kids. We were especially nervous about Liam (our 7 year old), and he was a little nervous as well.
.
After much deliberation, we decided to go for it and it was totally worth it. We safely and steadily made our way up the mountain, proudly watching our children climb up the side and knowing all the while that they will remember this hike for the rest of their lives.
.
Sometimes we don’t, sometimes we play it safe. Sometimes that’s the right thing to do.
.
But whenever possible we want to challenge our kids to do stuff that’s hard, that’s scary. Because those things stick with you for a long time, they shape your understanding of yourself – what you can accomplish and what you’re made of.
.
We all had a great hike on Beehive. The views were beautiful and the hike was an adventure, but for Liam, it was a defining moment when he did a hard thing and he won’t soon forget it.
